Anita began her involvement in music at a very early age, which gained her a position at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School (1982 - 1987). During this time she formed a very successful all girl jazz band with her sister and together they gave performances at the Sydney Opera House, Martin Place Amphitheatre, Sydney Town Hall and even appeared on the Ray Martin Midday Show.
Anita toured to England and France in 1987 and America, Canada and Japan in 1988 with the City of Sydney Bicentennial Concert Band.

In 1988 she began studies with Don Burrows, George Golla and Kerrie Biddell and completed the Associate Diploma of Jazz Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1989. She then went on to play in the hit musical "42nd Street" in 1990.

As a freelance musician Anita has played in many bands and venues throughout Australia. She has held residencies with her own groups at Cafe Gueville, Sweet Emma's Jazz Cafe and at the Strawberry Hills Hotel with band "Wildrice". The Anita Thomas Quartet has thrilled audiences at many jazz festivals including the Thredbo Jazz Festival 1995 and the Manly International Jazz Festival in both 1994 and 1995.

As an entertainer Anita worked for one year at Australia's Wonderland and still performs regularly heading the lunchtime show aboard the Sydney Showboat.

The Anita Thomas Trio has thrilled and delighted audiences at many gigs, concerts and jazz festivals throughout Australia, including the Thredbo Jazz Festival in 1995, 96, 97, 98 and 99 (when she was voted one of the three most popular bands at the Festival) and the Manly International Jazz Festival in 1994, 95, 96, 97 and 98. She is also a member of Australia's leading big band, the James Morrison Big Band, playing baritone saxophone and also plays with James Morrisons' Tribute to Louis Armstrong.
